Claire Cunningham
Claire is one of the UK’s most acclaimed and internationally renowned disabled artists. Her work is rooted in the study and use/misuse of her crutches and the exploration of the potential of her own specific physicality with a conscious rejection of traditional dance techniques (developed for non-disabled bodies). This runs alongside a deep interest in the lived experience of disability and its implications not only as a choreographer but also in terms of societal notions of knowledge, value, connection and interdependence. A self-identifying disabled artist, Cunningham’s work combines multiple art forms and ranges from the intimate solo show ME (Mobile/Evolution) (2009), to the large ensemble work 12 made for Candoco Dance Company.
Claire is currently touring her duet with Jess Curtis ‘The Way You Look (at me) Tonight’ as well as her new ensemble work ‘Thank You Very Much‘- commissioned and produced by Manchester International Festival, National Theatre Scotland and Perth Festival in association with tanzhaus NRW and Dance Umbrella.

Independent Practice
I am delighted by the support received through Dis_Tanzen Solo from November 2020- June 2021 in order to support my work as independent producer & consultant with a focus on developing producing & touring structures for contemporary performance & dance within Baden Württemberg whilst also investing in my practice based around the specificity of working within inclusive set ups and questioning structures & processes when producing work.
